Inca Trail Availability 2026

The classic Inca Trail isn’t the only path left by the ancient empire. Peru is home to thousands of miles of lesser-known, pristine Inca roads that offer breathtaking landscapes, untouched ruins, and complete solitude far away from the crowds. Because these remote trails pass through high Andean communities and protected natural areas, they require specialized logistical planning and community coordination to operate.

If you want to experience the true majesty of the Andes without the tourist crowds, these hidden trails—such as the Ancascocha Trek, Choquequirao Trail, or the Quarry Trek—are the perfect, authentic alternatives for an unforgettable journey.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions About Peru Travel

Planning a trip to Peru can raise practical questions. Here are clear answers to help you prepare with confidence.

How do you prevent altitude sickness in Cusco?

Take your first day slowly, drink water regularly, avoid alcohol, eat light meals and allow your body time to acclimatize before hiking.

What is the best trek to Machu Picchu?

The Classic Inca Trail is the most iconic route. The Short Inca Trail is ideal for travelers with less time, while Salkantay offers dramatic scenery and more flexible availability.

Do I need permits for the Inca Trail?

Yes. Inca Trail permits are limited and issued for a specific date and traveler, so we recommend booking as early as possible.

What should I pack for a Peru trek?

Bring layered clothing, comfortable hiking shoes, rain protection, sun protection, a refillable water bottle, personal medication and your original passport.

Can Panaka Travel create a private Peru itinerary?

Yes. We design private journeys around your interests, travel pace, preferred comfort level and budget.

What is the best time to visit Machu Picchu?

Peru can be visited year-round. The dry season generally offers clearer trekking conditions, while the rainy season brings greener landscapes and fewer visitors.

Do you offer airport transfers and local support?

Yes. Our local team can coordinate transfers and provide assistance throughout your journey in Peru.

Real stories, true adventures.

Unforgettable 4-Day Inca Trail Trek Choosing a local, indigenous-owned company was the perfect start knowing all the money stays directly within the community made the decision to do this 4-day Inca Trail trek feel even better. The entire experience completely blew me away, largely thanks to Lizandro. He was an absolutely amazing guide whose deep insights brought every ruin, plant, and historical detail to life. As an added bonus, he’s an expert on local birds pointing out species I completely would have missed and he knew exactly where to pause to show the absolute best spots to take photos along the trail. He set the tone for the entire trip. The logistics behind the scenes were just as impressive. The support crew of porters deserves a massive shoutout, the pace they set and the sheer effort they put in to have camp ready before we even arrived was unreal. Because of that teamwork, the food was outstanding. You simply don’t expect restaurant-tier meals when you're camping on the side of a mountain, especially given the logistics of cooking at high altitudes. I highly recommend going for this trek.

Amazing tour where everything is taken care of I had an amazing time with Panaka Travel. My guide Max was very friendly, knowledgeable and funny. During the trek the team takes care of everything: they set up your tent, prepare your meals and even bring you hot water to clean yourself. Would definitely recommend!

Choosing the right operator makes all of the difference in the world I had the pleasure of having Lizandro as my tour guide on the 4 day Inca Trail Trek. I'm pretty sure he knew every single person from Cusco to Machu Picchu. He also knows Quechua, Spanish and English fluently, so that's a huge plus. That's what a local, 25 year veteran of tours gets you. He knew the history behind every Inca ruin, Inca culture and tradition. For him, it's not just a tour, it's a history lesson, cultural immersion, and meaningful experience all at the same time. That's the difference between typical tourist trap and an authentic experience. I wish I knew about him before we signed up for the many of other excursions we did while in Cusco, but at least I can direct people to him now. If I ever make it back to Peru, I will contact Panaka Travel first for all of my excursions.

Lizandro is the man Lizandro is an amazing guide for the Salkantay Trek - incredibly knowledgeable about the route, the mountain, and the surrounding Sacred Valley, all delivered with a great sense of humour that keeps spirits high on the tough days. He goes out of his way to make sure you’re getting the most out of every stage of the trek, from the high passes to the cloud forest descent into Aguas Calientes. Whether it’s acclimatisation advice, local history, or just keeping the group motivated at 4,600m, Lizandro brings real expertise and warmth to the whole experience. Highly recommended!

Highly recommended! The best and most memorable adventure of the whole trip to Peru. The trail, although physically challenging due to altitude, was made easy by the whole support team. Everything was taken care of, so the only thing which was left for us to do, was to enjoy. Chef Yuri prepared us food worthy of a 5 star hotel. And our guide Lizandro kept us entertained with his good sense of humour and deep rooted knowledge of the Inca culture. Highly recommended!

4 day Inca Trail Experience Thankful to have had this experience of a lifetime! This hike rates one of the best I have been on, and I am grateful for great organisation and thoughtfulness, that helped build the stories and experience, into a very meaningful culmination at Machu Picchu. Thank you Panaka Travel!

Lizandro is an amazing guide! My husband and I had Lizandro as our guide and we had an amazing time thanks to him. We really enjoyed his style of tour guiding. He kept us company along the way but also gave us time to explore independently, while making sure that we're safe. He provided information about the trail, nature, culture, history, food, and answered all our questions, from the logistics of the trek, tour companies, and porters to Incan architecture and Cusco recommendations for food and massages. Lizandro has over 25 years of experience and it definitely shows. He gave us tips and advice that I feel like other groups we saw didn't get. He knows all the great (and less crowded) spots for amazing photos. He also has an eye for photography and took perfectly framed photos for us as well. He's very knowledgeable and we felt that we got so much out of our experience because we had an amazing tour guide like him. I can't recommend Lizandro enough!

Lizandro is an absolutely excellent guide, constantly looking after the group and you as an individual. We were lucky enough to do two tours with him. He takes the time to get to know you so he can give you advice thats best for you. I ended up getting sick (something before the trek) and he really looked after me. Not only that he helped me complete the trek without having to miss anything. That made a huge difference on a multiday trek. Lizandro knows so much about each area and I learned so much about the culture, history, flora and fauna from him. He is able to answer all questions and points out so many things you will otherwise miss. Above all else he is a kind and caring human being who will turn your group into a family by the end of the trek. I can't recommend him highly enough. He took care of me and my family before, during, and after.

One of the best experience I had in my trekking life! Lizandro our guide found the best balance to follow and motivate us through this journey. The food, views, habitations were perfect. It wasn’t only that… we learned a lot on the culture along the way. The setup step by step was perfect to keep us in the excitement! Morning, lunch and night briefing with the group was perfect to tight the group together. This experience has been unexpectedly pushing our self to a unprecedented self accomplishment! Thanks to everyone participating to this incredible adventure. I really recommend it to anyone looking for a good life experience!

We did two different tours with them: Rainbow Mountain and the Salkantay Trek with Lizandro as a guide, and both were fantastic from start to finish. For Rainbow Mountain, they picked us up extra early so we could beat the crowds. We ended up being some of the first people on the mountain, which made the experience so much more peaceful and enjoyable. They even brought snacks and drinks for us, and they were incredibly patient, letting us hike at our own pace while still getting us to the summit before the crowds arrived. They also went above and beyond with transportation. They took us to the airport and were even able to pick us up from the bus station after our trip, which was such a thoughtful gesture and made our travels so much easier. We also completed the Salkantay Trek with them, and our guide, Lizandro, was absolutely wonderful. He was kind, patient, funny, and so easy to talk to. He always made sure everyone was comfortable and never made us feel rushed. His is extremely knowledgable about Peru history and Inca’s we learned so much from him as a guide. If you're looking for a more personal, local experience with guides who genuinely care about you and your experience, Panaka Travel is the company to choose. Everyone was incredibly kind, attentive, and accommodating throughout our trip. We would absolutely book with them again!

We used Panaka Travel for the Rainbow Mountain trek. They were excellent in every way possible. We were truly well looked after. Lisandro’s guiding skills are excellent and he is full of lots of knowledge about history and culture. I have completed many day treks and multi day hikes with other companies but Panaka are stand out. I would not hesitate to use them again and cannot recommend them highly enough. Thank you for making our trip so memorable!

We recently did the 5-day Salkantay trek with Lizandro as a guide and it was an absolutely amazing experience! The care he shows for his clients, the enthusiasm he clearly has for his work as a guide, the openness with which he speaks about his culture, history and himself as a person, as well as his helpfulness (for example: he helped us get last minute Machu Picchu tickets and truly went above and beyond to make sure everyone in our group was comfortable and had a good experience) and professionalism really made this trek a once in a lifetime experience. I don’t think we would have had the same experience with another guide. I cannot recommend Lizandro more!!
